What Is Argentine Tango?

Argentine Tango Overview: Argentine Tango dancing consists of a variety of styles that developed in different regions and eras, and was originally developed primarily in Argentina and Uruguay. Argentine Tango is danced in an embrace that can vary from very open, in which leader and follower connect primarily through the arms, to very closed, in which the connection is chest-to-chest. It is often said that Argentine Tango dance is essentially walking with a partner to music. This may be true on some level but it is clear that over time a core language with a unique grammar and vocabulary has developed that is unmistakably Argentine Tango. As with all languages, there are regional dialects throughout the world as Argentine Tango has become a dance enjoyed and practiced internationally. But the core language remains and anyone who learns it can enjoyably communicate with anyone else who speaks the language, anywhere in the world.

Argentine Tango Music Argentine Tango dancing developed alongside a long and rich musical tradition of Tango music. Volumes of Tango music has been composed by many different orchestras over the last century. Not only is there a large volume of music, there is a breadth of stylistic differences between Tango orchestras as well. The orchestras of Di Sarli, d'Arienzo, Troilo and Pugliese, all four descendent from Italian immigrant families, represent distinct approaches to playing Tango music. While Argentine Tango dancing has historically been danced to Tango music, such as the orchestras of Di Sarli, d'Arienzo, and Troilo, in the '90s a younger generation of Tango dancers began dancing Tango other musics that provided an appropriate tempo and feeling. These "alternative" musics from other genres range from "world music", "electro-Tango", "experimental rock", to "trip hop", "dub step", and "blues", to name a few.

Why you should dance Argentine Tango If you enjoy the idea of connecting deeply, peacefully, and gracefully with your dance partner, Argentine Tango will definitely appeal to you. Argentine Tango contrasts with more energetic dances such as Salsa, or more youthful dances such as the Lindy Hop. Argentine Tango cultivates a calm and attentive presence and awareness of your body and being, and that of your partner in a way that most other dances do not. If you enjoy the creative freedom afforded by a highly improvised dance, where special value is placed on awareness and connection Argentine Tango will appeal to you. If you are attracted to the idea of being able to travel virtually anywhere in the world, and be able to plug into a community of interesting people who speak your dance language, then you should invest in learning Argentine Tango. It may be the most international of the social dance forms.
