What Is Ballroom?
Ballroom Dance Overview: Ballroom dancing includes a wide range of social and competitive partner dances, derived from such various traditions as formal Victorian dancing, contemporary Latin dancing, and American jazz and swing dances. NOTE: As we continue to add Ballroom lessons on this site, this style will likely be split into its individual dances, under the larger Ballroom family.
How it works: The many dance styles that are included in this umbrella term are further broken down into International Standard, International Latin, American Smooth, and American Rhythm subcategories. Each of these groups have their own techniques and stylistic preferences which are discussed in each style's introductory pack on iDance. The dances we offer (so far) include Cha Cha, Rumba, East Coast Swing, Bolero, Mambo, West Coast Swing, Merengue, Hustle, Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz, Samba, and Salsa. It should be noted that many of these dances are also done "outside" the competitive and social Ballroom dance world, in many cases with substantial difference in technique, styling, and approach.
Why you should dance Ballroom: If you've never partner danced before, you will be impressed with the organized approach offered by this system of dance, allowing you to become socially proficient at many styles in a relatively short time! If you like the idea of learning routines with a partner, and are interested in competition, you may also be attracted to the opportunities Ballroom dance has to offer. Finally, if what you're looking for is exposure to the graceful and stately partner dances of a bygone era, these lessons can open up for you a whole new world of experiences.
